Outline for Term Paper

From various states of delusion to ultimate confession, Raskolnikov from Doystoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment" is driven to various mental states throughout the novel illustrating the raw power of guilt as it consumes a person's mind.

Outline

I. Beginning of the Guilt
 a. Raskolnikov plans a murder because he thinks that he is ridding society of one less problem.
 b. Commits murder because he thinks he is doing world a favor
 b. Comes to realization, after killing the old pawn lady, that he hasn't actually done anything.

II. The Guilt Sets In "Punishment"
 a. He becomes uncomfortable anytime anybody brings up crime
 b. Becomes delirious
 c. Becomes mean - see reaction to letter

III. Trying to get rid of the Guilt
 a. Raskolnikov tries endlessly to justify his actions - he didn't take the money the old lady
 b. Writes article about people who "overstep law"
 c. Not sure…need more information?

IV. The Downfall & Guilt
 a. Basically plummets in this state of consciousness
 b. Realizes he can't handle it anymore - passing out consistently
 c. Goes to police station, finally admits it to Sonya - because he likes her
 d. "Guilt" is the true punishment after the "Crime"
 e. Cultivates with him declaring his guilt publicly, the only way to actually get rid of it, at the intersection in Petersberg
